Liverpool lift Champions League trophy after beating Spurs in Madrid

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Welcome to our live coverage of the 2019 Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the perfect start when he hammered home a second minute penalty after Moussa Sissoko was adjudged to have handballed the ball in the area. A streaker interrupted proceedings before Divock Origi sealed the win late on with a smart finish.

The opening show

Imagine Dragons are performing ahead of the game.

After that we will see who is On Top Of The World, whether Liverpool can eliminate their Demons from last year and if Spurs can replicate their Amsterdam triumph.

It's Time (almost)

I'll get my coat.

The players are out

Tottenham and Liverpool make their way onto the pitch as we approach to the Champions League anthem being played live, I'm a big fan of that!

Kick-off is just minutes away!

We're off

The waiting is over and Liverpool get us underway in the 2019 Champions League final!

All four corners of the ground rose as Jose Antonio Reyes, who tragically died earlier today, was remembered.

PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!

What drama!

Liverpool play it long straight away and Mane is in possession on the right. He cuts inside and sees a cross blocked by Moussa Sissoko's arm.

A short VAR referral confirms the decision.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Mohamed Salah scores!

The Egyptian makes no mistake with the penalty and he smashes it beyond Hugo Lloris.

There's no messing about as he slams the ball past the goalkeeper before he can get anywhere near it.

5: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Spurs calm things down and get some touches on the ball to settle the early nerves. They win a corner which is whipped in by Kieran Trippier, but Virgil Van Dijk rises above Harry Kane to clear.

10: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Tottenham have settled a little bit here and are working their way through the Liverpool lines in the way they'd hope.

They work the ball forward and Moussa Sissoko is presented with a decent opening to shoot, but blazes well over.

11: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool get their first corner after Virgil Van Dijk's long ball to Sadio Mane is cleared away.

Hugo Lloris comes out and pats the ball away from a crowded area. Good goalkeeping.

A fast goal, but not the fastest

At 01:48, Mohamed Salah's opening goal is just the second fastest in the Champions League final. Paolo Maldini's strike against Liverpool in 2005 was almost a minute faster (00:50)
