Uefa make mistake in Champions League draw

Follow live coverage after the Champions League draw had to be redone following an extraordinary mistake in the initial ceremony.

Controversy struck when Manchester United were initially drawn to play against Villarreal, yet having already faced the Liga club in the group stages, this was in error. Uefa’s Giorgio Marchetti spotted the mistake and ordered the tie to be re-drawn, with Villarreal ultimately facing Manchester City. But a technical error appeared to subsequently block United from being selected as one of the teams eligible to play the next side drawn out of the hat, Atletico with Uefa confirming the intial draw void. A second, official ceremony then took place.

2019 champions Liverpool now face Inter Milan, three-time winners United take on Atletico Madrid, Premier League champions City play Sporting and defending champions Chelsea go up against Lille, just as they did in the initial draw. First legs will take place on 15-16 and 22-23 February, before second legs on 8-9 and 15-16 March.

Follow all the reaction from the Champions League draw below.

Champions League draw

Confusion reigned following Monday's draw for the Champions League last-16 after Manchester United's ball was left out from the pot to play Atletico Madrid.

United were eventually pitted against Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stages, but the draw was then voided.

The re-draw then saw them - rather ironically - pitted against Atletico Madrid.

Champions League draw

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has given his take on Manchester United being drawn against Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “Atletico play more defensive on the counter, they have some world-class players.

‘Slightly easier (than Paris Saint-Germain) for United but still really difficult. Flip of a coin.”

I guess one of the casualties of today is we missed out on seeing Ronaldo vs Messi one final time. PSG and Manchester United were originally drawn together before the re-draw.

United will now face Atletico Madrid, while PSG take on Real Madrid.

Lovely little ‘stat’ from Richard Jolly. A reminder that Barcelona have drawn Napoli in the second round of the Europa League.

Manchester United close training ground following Covid cases

A bit of news away from the draw...

Speaking of Manchester United, they have just released a statement following the positive Covid tests at the club confirming that the training ground has been closed.

They are due to face Brentford tomorrow evening.

The statement reads: “Manchester United can confirm that following PCR test confirmation of yesterday’s positive LFT Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.

“Individuals who tested positive are isolating per Premier League protocols.

“Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a Covid infection and player preparation perspective.

“Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion.”
