Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Zimbabwe 286 Sri Lanka 232-4

MARVAN ATAPATTU'S unbeaten century helped put Sri Lanka in a strong position at the end of the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo yesterday. Atapattu struck 109 not out for his third Test century.

Zimbabwe started the day on 256 for 8 and added another 30, with Pramodya Wickramasinghe taking both remaining wickets to complete his Test-best figures of 6 for 60.

Sri Lanka's openers, Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya, put on 85 for the first wicket before their captain, Jayasuriya, was lbw to Andrew Whittall. Russel Arnold (7), Mahela Jayawardene (17) and Tuwan Dilshan (9) fell in quick succession and at 159 for 4, Zimbabwe were threatening to take control, but an unbroken partnership of 73 between Atapattu and Romesh Kaluwitharana steadied them.
