Savannah Marshall retained her WBO middleweight title and moved a step closer to a seismic unification bout with Claressa Shields by knocking out Femke Hermans on Saturday.

Hartlepool fighter Marshall dropped her Belgian challenger in the final second of the third round, flooring Hermans with a short left hook to end the contest, retain her title and remain unbeaten at 12-0 with 10 knockouts. Marshall’s victory at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle was observed by Shields, the American watching on from the front row as Marshall handed Hermans the first stoppage loss of the Belgian’s career. Shields, meanwhile, previously went the distance with Hermans.

A unification bout between Marshall and unified champion Shields is now expected to take place this summer, with Boxxer chief Ben Shalom saying “late June, early July” is the target. Marshall told Sky Sports: “Claressa can’t handle my power. I believe I severely hurt Claressa.” Shields responded: “She’s gonna have trouble with me, and she’s definitely not gonna knock me out. Femke was able to make her miss, and I’m ten times faster than Femke, so what do you think I’m gonna do?”

Rea vs Ndafoluma – Round 4

Ndafoluma crouches and slings some jabs to Rea’s body. Rea is just waiting a bit too long here.

The Mancunian is just about caught on the end of an overhand right... He’s backed up and takes a straight right to the body before narrowly missing with a counter left hook up top.

Again, though, Rea might benefit from a bit more activity, rather than hoping for the perfect counter strike.

Ndafoluma snaps back Rea’s head with a jab, and the Briton retaliates with a fine right hand! Ndafoluma responds in kind!

DOWN GOES NDAFOLUMA! After all we just said, it’s a counter left hook from Rea that does it, his back against the ropes!

Ndafoluma beats the referee’s count to make it to the bell.

Rea vs Ndafoluma – Round 3

Ricky Hatton is in Rea’s corner but takes a back seat as the fighter receives advice from his chief cornerman between rounds.

Ndafoluma lands some mean hooks and uppercuts to the body of Rea. It’s been a decent start by Ndafoluma, and Rea will need to start imposing himself soon. Eight rounds scheduled here.

Rea stands southpaw but mistimes a left hand upon entry.

More good body work from Ndafoluma, but Rea sneaks in a sharp left hand before his opponent connects with a left hook after the bell!

Rea vs Ndafoluma – Round 2

Rea is unbeaten at 12-0 at just 24 years old. His opponent is much more experienced but came into this bout on the back of a stoppage loss.

Ndafoluma misses with a slow overhand right. Rea appears to drop his opponent with a right, but the referee rules that it was not a knockdown!

Ndafoluma now pours on pressure, throwing body shots off both sides with Rea’s back against the ropes.

Rea gets back into space and uses some decent head movement to avoid some big shots from the Namibian.

Rea vs Ndafoluma – Round 1

Manchester’s Rea secured a quickfire knockout win last time out, on the Amir Khan vs Kell Brook undercard in February.

Ndafoluma takes the centre of the ring early on and flicks out some jabs – with mixed success. Rea narrowly misses with an overhand right.

Some good straight rights to the body by Ndafoluma now. Rea responds by squeezing a jab through his opponent’s guard before making the Namibian miss with a body uppercut and hook to the head.

Ndafoluma lands a right up top this time, though, as Rea takes one to give one.

Rea lands a sharp right straight that appears to stagger his opponent slightly!
