1966 Born 30 June, Brooklyn, New York.

1979 Taken by the trainer Cus D'Amato from reform school.

1986 At 20 years 144 days, becomes youngest ever heavyweight champion.

1987 Becomes undisputed heavyweight champion. Charged with assault after allegedly hitting parking attendant. Settles out of court.

1988 Marries the actress Robin Givens. Breaks right hand in street brawl with former opponent Mitch Green. Knocked unconscious after driving his car into tree in a driveway. Police called to Tyson's home after he throws furniture out of the window and forces Givens and her mother to flee. Givens sues for divorce.

1989 Tyson and Givens divorce. Tyson accused of slapping parking attendant in Los Angeles. Charges later dropped. Fined pounds 300 and sentenced to community service for speeding.

1990 Knocked out by James "Buster" Douglas in 10th round in Tokyo to lose world heavyweight title in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Sued by Phyllis Polaner, former aide to Givens, for sexual assault and harassment. New York City civil jury finds Tyson committed battery but that his behaviour was "not outrageous".

1991 Admits paternity of eight-month-old girl born to Kimberly Scarborough. Rapes 18-year-old Miss Black America contestant Desiree Washington in hotel room. Natalie Fears files pounds 8m palimony and paternity lawsuit against Tyson.

1992 Convicted of rape, jailed for six years.

1995 Indianapolis court agrees to early release.

1996 Regains WBC heavyweight title with third-round stoppage of Frank Bruno. Later stopped in 11th round against Evander Holyfield.

1997 Challenges Holyfield for WBA title and is disqualified for biting off part of Holyfield's ear.

1997 Fined pounds 2m and loses boxing licence. Suffers broken ribs in a motorcycling accident in October.

1998 Accused of assaulting two motorists.

1999 Returns to the ring, knocks out the South African Francois Botha in the fifth round. On 5 February sentenced to two years in prison, one suspended, for assault.
