At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A 40-stone US teenager who disappeared with his mother after she was accused of neglecting his health has been found with her at a laundry in Maryland.
Paramedics checked 14-year-old Alexander Draper before turning him over to the Maryland Department of Human Resources. Police said the two were found in Baltimore County.
Police said his mother, Jerri Gray, was arrested on a charge of violating a custody order. South Carolina officials plan to pursue her extradition back to the state.
Authorities said the teenager was at a "stage of critical health risk".
The South Carolina Department of Social Services contacted deputies on Tuesday after Ms Gray failed to make a scheduled court appearance so officials could begin investigating claims of child neglect and endangerment.
