Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hosni Mubarak's trial on charges of ordering the killing of protesters will be held at a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo instead of a convention centre in the heart of the capital, the head of the appeals court said yesterday.
The change appears to be linked to concerns over security during the ousted president's trial, which is due to begin on Wednesday.
Mr Mubarak, 83, will stand trial with his security chief and six other senior security officials. Hundreds of protesters died in a crackdown that failed to stop Mr Mubarak being forced from power on 11 February.
Assistant Justice Minister Mohammed Munie told the state-run Mena news agency that the trial will be held in an auditorium that can hold up to 600 people. He said a cage for the defendants had already been prepared. Only state television will be allowed to have cameras inside the hall.
