A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of an 11-month-old baby girl, police said today.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the baby when they were called to a property in Nursery Lane, Worthing, West Sussex, just before 10am on Friday.

She was admitted to Worthing Hospital from where she was collected by a specialist team from St Thomas's Hospital in central London.

After being pronounced dead just after 3pm yesterday, a man from Worthing was arrested at St Thomas's on suspicion of murder and transferred to Sussex for questioning.

He remained in custody this morning, a Sussex Police spokesman said. A post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles, leading the inquiry, said: "The post-mortem to be carried out by a Home Office pathologist in London on Monday will establish the reason for this little girl's tragic death.

"At this stage, however, we are sufficiently concerned to make this arrest and my team will strive to ensure that we establish the truth surrounding the circumstances of her death."
