A Nobel Prize-winning geneticist, she was responsible for the discovery of 'jumping genes' in maize - a finding which revealed that genes were transposable elements moving from one place to another on a chromosome. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1983. (An obituary follows.)
Teddy Turner, actor, died Leeds, aged 75. A member of the cast of Coronation Street, he played Chalky White between 1982 and 1983. He was Bill Whiteley in Emmerdale Farm and appeared in Ripping Yarns and Never The Twain. His voice was used in a Hovis bread advertisement.
Erich Bielka-Karltreu, politician, died Vienna 1 September, aged 84. Served as Austria's foreign minister from 1974 to 1976 in the Socialist Party lead by Chancellor Bruno Kreisky. Served as ambassador to Turkey, Switzerland and France.
James Stanley Hilary Wade, surgeon, died Cardiff 15 August, aged 76. Consultant surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales, he specialised in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Served as President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in 1974.
Billy Walsh, polo player, died aged 84. Founder and Manager of the Ham Polo Club (1946-82).
