From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. One might suggest it’s the reviews Jamie Dornan should fear when the Fifty Shades of Grey movie finally hits the big screen next month – not the legions of adoring fans who will flock to see it and send it soaring up the box office chart.

But the actor, who plays the S&M obsessed lead Christian Grey, has expressed serious concerns over his personal safety when he takes to the red carpet in February.

“I almost don't want to put this out there into the ether, but I fear I'll get murdered, like John Lennon, by one of those mad fans at the premiere,” he told Details magazine.

“Because a lot of people are very angry that I'm playing this character. And I'm a father now, and a husband. I don't want to die yet.”

He added: “And when I do get murdered, people will say, 'God, isn't it haunting how he did that interview in Details magazine and predicted his own death on the red carpet?'”

Lennon was shot dead by Beatles enthusiast Mark David Chapman at the entrance to the building where he lived in New York City in 1980.

The film was recently given an R rating in the US, meaning teenagers under the age of 17 will embarrassingly only be able to watch it if they are accompanied by an adult.

Producer Dana Brunetti hinted last year that a more explicit take on E.L. James’ best-selling erotic novel could also be released, although it is yet to be announced.

Dornan recently defended claims that Fifty Shades glamorised violence against women.

“It’s all consensual,” he told GQ. “There’s weirder s**t than [S&M]. I think plane spotting is far weirder than S&M. That I really don’t get.

“I can understand why people are into S&M but standing outside Heathrow Terminal 5 waiting for Ryanair to come in?”

Fifty Shades of Grey will be released in UK cinemas on 13 February.
