US Open betting tips: Women’s singles

World No 1 Iga Swiatek has been installed as the clear favourite to win a second consecutive US Open title this year.

The 22-year-old superstar has already racked up four grand slam victories and she carries a great deal of momentum into the tournament.

Swiatek will face fierce competition from world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka – who has the best record on hardcourts this year – and local hero Jessica Pegula.

However, it is worth noting that underdogs have a great record in women’s grand slam events over the past few years.

Marketa Vondrousova defied odds of 100/1 to win Wimbledon earlier this summer and Emma Raducanu won the US Open in 2021 despite bookmakers handing her pre-tournament odds of 400/1.

It often pays to look a little further down the list for each-way value and we have picked out a few players that could take this tournament by storm.

Time for Gauff to come of age

Coco Gauff burst onto the scene when she beat the legendary Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon back in 2019.

She was just 15 years old at the time, so her run to the fourth round marked her out as a future grand slam champion.

Gauff is now 19 and she has amassed more than $8 million in prize money after winning five singles titles during her fledgling career.

She climbed up to sixth in the WTA rankings after winning the Cincinnati Open earlier this month, which should stand her in good stead for the US Open.

Gauff is still searching for her first grand slam triumph but she has been knocking on the door over the past couple of years.

She finished runner-up at the French Open last year and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open too.

Gauff has grown both physically and mentally in 2023 and she delivered a string of mature, powerful performances to claim her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati.

The American fans will cheer her on at the US Open and she looks like a great each-way bet at odds of 12/1 with Betway.

Tip: Coco Gauff – 12/1 each-way with Betway

Can Jabeur finally claim that elusive grand slam?

Tricky Tunisian star Ons Jabeur will bid to finally clinch an elusive grand slam title when she takes on the world’s best players in New York.

Jabeur produced a series of dazzling performances as she finished runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

She is not as powerful as some of her elite rivals but she makes up for it with a remarkable range of insouciant drop shots and well-timed slices.

The 28-year-old is also a tremendous athlete, blessed with impressive acceleration, stamina and agility, so she is a superb defensive player too.

18+ New customers only. Opt in, and bet £10 on sports (odds 2.00+) before 23:59 UK time on 07/09/23. No cash out. Get 4x£10 tennis free bets at specified odds, which expire at specified times. She appeared to be on the brink of winning her first grand slam at Wimbledon this summer after beating Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals and Sabalenka in the semi-finals.

After all, she had lost to Rybakina in the 2022 Wimbledon final and Sabalenka in the 2022 US Open final, so it was encouraging to see her exorcise those demons.

However, she suffered a straight sets defeat to the unheralded Vondrousova in the final, meaning her hunt for a grand slam crown goes on.

Jabeur’s record on hardcourt this year leaves much to be desired – four wins and four defeats from eight matches.

Yet she typically comes into her own at grand slams and has all the necessary attributes to reach another final at the US Open.

Tip: Ons Jabeur – 16/1 each-way with Bet365

Muchova is heading in the right direction

It seems like only a matter of time before Karolina Muchova becomes a grand slam champion.

The 27-year-old Czech player beat Sabalenka en route to reaching the French Open final at Roland-Garros earlier this year.

She played well against Swiatek in the final before eventually losing in three sets but it was nevertheless an encouraging performance.

Muchova then reached her first WTA 1000 final earlier this month but she lost to Gauff in straight sets in Cincinnati.

Eight of the last 15 grand slam women’s singles titles have been claimed by players that had never previously won a major.

Muchova looks perfectly capable of maintaining that trend after winning 15 of 21 matches on hardcourt surfaces this year.

She reached the fourth round of the US Open back in 2020, before struggling with injuries, but she is now back to full fitness.

Muchova is an aggressive all-court player but her intelligence and variety are reminiscent of Jabeur, so she also has the potential to lift the trophy this year.

Tip: Karolina Muchova – 25/1 each-way with Betfred
