England were installed as the second favourites to win the Women’s World Cup after storming to victory at Euro 2022 last summer.
They fired in 22 goals in six games at that tournament, which culminated with a famous 2-1 win against Germany at Wembley in the final.
Some fans may have expected the Lionesses to sweep their opponents aside with similar contempt at this tournament, but it has not quite worked out that way.
Their opening win against Haiti was a tense, scrappy affair, decided by midfielder Georgia Stanway’s re-taken penalty.
England then took an early lead against Denmark in their second group stage match and they worked hard to protect it for the subsequent 84 minutes.
Their performances will not exactly strike fear into the hearts of their opponents, but manager Sarah Wiegmann is unlikely to care.
They are now one of just four teams with a 100 per cent record at this tournament, which has already served up all manner of shock results. The truly great teams find a way to win when they are not firing on all cylinders, and that has been the case thus far for England.
Despite winning their opening two matches, they cannot afford to relax, as they could still crash out of the tournament if they lose to China and Denmark beat Haiti.
They should produce another resolute, committed performance against the reigning Asian champions, allowing them to grind out another low-scoring victory.

Back the Lionesses’ defence to hold firm against China
Group D of the Women’s World Cup has not served up much entertainment for neutral fans thus far, as every game within the group has finished 1-0, and chances have been few and far between.
England were unstoppable in attack at the Euros last summer, led by Beth Mead’s six goals and five assists. She was ruled out of this tournament with a long-term injury, and the Lionesses have missed her flair and dynamism in attack.
Alessia Russo, handed the chance to lead the line after Ellen White’s retirement, has not had much service and she has not yet found the back of the net Down Under.
Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly, who was also vying to start up front at this tournament, was deployed at left-back against Denmark.
While the attack has looked rusty, England’s defence has been rock-solid, despite missing injured captain Leah Williamson.
Goalkeeper Mary Earps did not have much to do in either game, as Millie Bright and Alex Greenwood kept things tight at the back.
That trend could continue against China, who lost 1-0 to Denmark in their opener before scraping a 1-0 victory over Haiti courtesy of a late penalty from Wang Shuang.
China have only managed six shots on target so far at this tournament, and they may struggle to breach this well-drilled England backline, so the 11/10 odds at Unibet on another England win to nil look tempting.
This game could be decided by a moment of magic and the prodigiously talented Lauren James could supply it for the Lionesses, so odds of 13/5 on her finding the back of the net are also interesting.
Stretched World Cup game could lead to plenty of corners
There is every reason to think that these teams will breach the over 9.5 corners mark set by new betting sites and established UK bookmakers alike when they lock horns in Adelaide.
Both of England’s games at this tournament have seen over 9.5 corners. They have been awarded 16 - seven against Haiti and nine against Denmark - and they have given away five corners.
They spend a lot of their time building up attacks in wide areas, with full-backs encouraged to overlap and whip balls into the box.
That naturally leads to a lot of corners. For example, they were awarded 13 corners in a pre-tournament friendly against Portugal at the start of July, and they had nine corners in their previous match against Australia.
