Bette Midler has accused Twitter of double standards and asked why the social media site has banned Azealia Banks but not Donald Trump.

Banks was suspended from Twitter following her vitriolic attack on Zayn Malik and 14-year-old Disney actress Skai Jackson last week. The 24-year-old Harlem-born musician targeted Malik with a series of homophobic and racist insults in a lengthy Twitter tirade and called Skai a “black little b***h”.

Midler has now asked why Twitter chose to suspend Banks but not the presumptive Republican nominee.

Mr Trump has made a number of controversial comments about women and race on Twitter but has never had his account suspended.

In fact, back in October 2012, he made a comment about the actress herself.

Mr Trump has made numerous remarks about other women on Twitter, including one about Ariana Huffington, where he wrote: "@ariannahuff is unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man - he made a good decision."

He also tweeted a chart of false US race and murder crime statistics from a fictional organisation back in November which said that 81 per cent of whites who are murdered are murdered by blacks and the amount of blacks killed by the police was one per cent.

In the past, he has also tweeted, "Sadly, the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our major cities is committed by blacks and hispanics - a tough subject - must be discussed".

Banks has issued an apology for her comments on Instagram but remains banned from Twitter.
